Le Tour de France

7th – 24th July 2016

The 103rd edition of Le Tour de France will begin at the UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont Saint-Michel on the 7th of July. The world-renowned cycling event will see 198 riders race across France, Spain, Andorra and Switzerland, to compete for the prestigious yellow jersey. On their way to Paris the 22 teams will pass through the south of France, offering the chance for guests at Amarante Cannes to cheer on competitors from the side of the road.

Following a flat 162.5km ride from Caracassonne to Montpellier on Wednesday the 13th, the cyclists will be taking on a more mountainous route from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux on the Thursday. This 184km stage will pass by Avignon, circling through the likes of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Gordes, before heading up north to the 1,912m mountain.

One of the closest points to Cannes will be the village of Plan-d’Orgon, located an approximate two hour drive from our four-star hotel. The scenic destination is located within a small mountain range called the Chaîne des Alpilles; an area rich in limestone and covered in pine and oak forests, as well as fields of olive and apricot trees. However, those who miss out on the live event will still be able to join crowds in Cannes’ many stylish cafés and bars to enjoy the electric atmosphere while watching on TV.

Nuits Musicales du Suquet

18th – 23rd July 2016

The annual music event 'Nuits musicales du Suquet' will offer five nights of concerts in the picturesque square of the Church of Notre-Dame d'Espérance. These unique performances will offer the chance to see renowned international and national musicians perform classical, jazz, blues and world music under the stars for free.

Catch a recital of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that combines readings by award-winning actor Francis Huster and music by the likes of Chopin and Beethoven, performed by classical pianist Giovanni Bellucci. Listen to music from Egypt’s Nadha period by Tarek Abdallah and Adel Shams El-Din, while Ensemble Tavagna will be performing traditional Corsican songs.

There’ll be the chance to watch both the Franz Liszt Orchestra of Budapest and the Cannes Orchestra itself, which will performing under the patronage of UNESCO. The grand finale will see percussionist Jean-My Truong joined by 10 guitarists and vocalists on stage to perform the closing concert, ‘Passion Guitares’. This will be a truly unforgettable event for any music fan visiting Cannes this July.

Festival D’Art Pyrotechnique

14th July – 24th August 2016

This International Firework Festival will see the skies of Cannes fill with a flurry of multi-coloured fireworks on six summer evenings. Spread over July and August, this annual event will attract crowds of thousands to gather along la Croisette and in boats along the harbour to watch the night’s sky light up thanks to six award-winning, international fireworks production companies.

The free-of-charge festival will start on the 14th of July with a show from Mexico’s Pyrotecnia Reyes. This display will explore Mexico’s rich history and culture, accompanied by music such as folk song ‘La Bamba’. Italy’s PyroEmotions will follow with the theme ofLife is Beautiful’ on the 21st, which will offer a joyful presentation to songs such as ‘Moon River’ from the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. While Finland’s JoHo Pyro is set to put on a more dramatic display on the 29th while portraying a Viking’s voyage through the rough and powerful Northern Seas.

August’s events will be on the 7th, 15th and 24th, offering the chance to catch displays from companies based in France, Australia and the Czech Republic. Each of the six presentations will be judged by a panel, and will be competing to initially win the Silver Vestale (which is the name of Zeus’ sister, the fire goddess). There is also a Gold Vestale up for grabs every four years, which will be fought over by previous prize-winners. With the chance to see some of the most awe-inspiring firework displays in the world, this atmospheric event will be unmissable during a summer stay at Amarante Cannes.

Fiesta Flamenca

28th July 2016

The world-famous Palais des Festivals et des Congrès will be hosting an evening dedicated to the art of Flamenco. Attendees can look forward to discovering and trying the passionate form of dance that combines tradition with performance art. The evening will start at 7:30pm with demonstrations and an introduction from 'Pimienta Cultura Flamenca' and Seville’s Giraldillo group.

Take the opportunity to discover the four elements that make up a Flamenco performance; Cante, the voice, Baile, the dance, Toque, the Flamenco guitar, and finally, and perhaps most importantly, Jaleo, which translates to ‘fuss’ or ‘hell-raising’…and includes the rhythmic handclapping. However, those not quite brave enough to head to the dance floor can opt to enjoy sampling Spanish specialities including paella and a glass or two of Sangria at the bodega.

A heart-racing performance will follow at 9:30pm. Dancers will include the likes of José Jurado and Isabel Rodríguez Templanzaj, who hail from one of Madrid’s most famous tablaos (a space in which to watch Flamenco) called Templanza - Una Noche en Casa Patas. Under the artistic direction of Juan Carmona, this mesmerising whirlwind of sound and colour, provided by the beautiful, frill-covered costumes, will inspire foot-stomping in every member of the family this July.

Whether you opt to watch an outstanding firework display, a world-class cycling race or classical music performance…or even try Flamenco dancing, Cannes can offer an exciting range of events to enjoy during a stay at Amarante Cannes this July.
